Decathlon extends sustainable sport gear scheme

Sports retailer, Decathlon, has expanded its sports gear buyback scheme.

The initiative allows Decathlon customers to repair or swap their old sports equipment in exchange for store credit, as reported by Retail Week.

The scheme initially launched in October for own brand bicycles, but is now being extended to the retailer's other sports categories, including water sport items such as paddleboards and kayaks, rackets, fitness equipment and camping equipment.

Research by Decathlon, which has a big store in Cheltenham, found that almost a third of British homes have unused sporting equipment at home. It found the most common were weights, gym equipment, bikes, tennis rackets, golf clubs and footballs.

The new scheme is available in stores and online. Shoppers can drop off their old equipment at their nearest Decathlon store, in return for vouchers.

The retailer will then refurbish and sell the used products, as part of its second-life scheme.

Decathlon said its priority is driving participation in sport and encouraging it to happen in a sustainable way. The scheme will help more people to enjoy sport at a lower cost.
