Top five things to do in Gloucestershire this weekend

There's a great selection of things to do in and around the county this weekend, from theatre to family fun. This is our top pick.

1# Have fun with all the family at the Pied Piper Summer Show, Highnam Court

The fantastic event is held just a few miles outside Gloucester, at the beautiful Highnam Court and boasts a host of attractions for everyone.

Building on the success of the hugely popular Gloucestershire Motor Show, this year's event is going to be bigger and better than ever, with more activities on offer for all the family.

It incorporates many of the much-loved elements of the motor show, with 200 classic cars arriving over both days, and county dealerships such as Blade Group, Warners Motor Group, Baylis Group and Cotswold BMW will have their latest vehicles on display.

There will be plenty for the children to do, as well with a packed-out family entertainment programme including new football tricks sessions and BMX skills shows, plus go karting, Punch and Judy, falconry, a bouncy castle and much more. Also new for this year, Chorley's Auctioneers will be there on Saturday and Sunday hosting Antiques Roadshow-style sessions for people to bring along items to be valued.

2# Grab your last chance to see Barn Theatre's second production, One Minute

One Minute, written by the Olivier and Tony award-winning playwright Simon Stephens, follows the stories of five characters who become united after the disappearance of a child. The play marks 29-year old artistic director Iwan Lewis's directorial debut.

Running from May 19 - June 16, the cast includes star of Bad Education, Sherlock and Misfits, Jack Bence; Rebecca Crankshaw, Sarah Hanly; Gary Summers and Sophie May Wake.

The play follows several connected characters through their struggles with Daisy Schults's disappearance: the two policemen investigating the disappearance; Daisy's mother Anne; and Marie Louise, a woman who believes she glimpsed Daisy after she had been separated from her mother.

3# Learn about all that connects and divides us at Cheltenham Science Festival

Broadcasters Maddie Moate and Olly Mann and cyber security experts Jessica Barker and FC are guest curators for the 2018 Cheltenham Science Festival.

This year's festival, running from June 5-10, looks at what connects and divides us - from personal relationships, health and language to the law, global politics and the universe.

It examines significant anniversaries connecting us to the past and look forward to what's in store for future connectivity.

With more than 80 free activities in the interactive zones attracting upwards of 23,000 people, visitors of all ages are invited to create, invent, play and explore.

This year there's a brand new Cyber Zone and the return of the Maker Shack by popular demand.

4# Enjoy a truly memorable live music experience from the Beach Boyz Tribute Band, Bacon Theatre

The Bacon Theatre in Cheltenham is the setting for a concert guaranteed to leave everyone with a smile on their face, a song in their heart and a truly memorable live music experience to cherish.

The performers of this extravaganza express, Beach Boyz Tribute Band deliver a stunning show of technicolour harmonies that will take your breath away.

A unique opportunity to hear a comprehensive selection of chart hits America's biggest pop band ever recorded including God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, I Get Around, Surfin' USA, Fun Fun Fun, California Girls, Sloop John B and many more that you will surely know and by the end of the evening learn to love.

5# Celebrate a penguin's birthday at Birdland, Bourton-on-the-water

Spike, who was born in 2007, had to be hand-reared by keepers after being abandoned as an egg by his parents Frank and Beryl.

Over the years he has become one of the country's best known penguins with more than 9,000 followers on Facebook.

He's a regular on TV and has even starred alongside the legendary Sir David Attenborough as part of the Natural Curiosities series.

To celebrate his big day, keepers at the Bourton-on-the-Water wildlife attraction are planning on presenting him with a selection of his favourite fishy treats and are hoping visitors will join them in singing happy birthday.
