Morrisons slashes thousands of jobs

Morrisons has cut more than 3,600 jobs, despite a return to profit.
The supermarket posted a pre-tax profit of £2.1bn for the year to October 27, 2024 - a big turnaround from losses of £919m in 2023 and £1.3bn in 2022, as reported by Retail Gazette.

Morrisons cut its workforce from 104,819 to 101,144 during the financial year - with store staff numbers down from 88,258 to 85,508, manufacturing roles reduced from 7,865 to 7,612, distribution staff cut from 5,783 to 5,424 and head office staff cut from 2,913 to 2,600.
These cuts are in addition to more than 8,800 job losses the previous year.
Revenue fell from £18.3bn to £17bn, despite like-for-like sales going up by 3.9% and total sales growing 4.2% to £3.9bn in the second quarter.
Morrisons said it had worked hard during the year to focus on price, promotions and rewards for loyalty against a challenging economic climate.
Yesterday (August 4), Punchline-Gloucester.com reported that former big four supermarket Morrisons had slipped to the UK's sixth biggest grocer for food and drink sales.
