Lidl becomes UK’s fifth biggest grocer

Morrisons has plunged to sixth largest UK supermarket for food and drink sales.

Lidl's food and drink market share hit 7.7% in the year to July 13, overtaking former big four supermarket Morrisons' 7.6%, as reported by Retail Gazette.

Data from Worldpanel by Numerator (formerly Kantar) show Lidl's food and drink market share rose from 7.3% in the previous 52 weeks, due to its revenues increasing by 10.1%, while Morrisons' food and drink share fell 7.8% as its sales rose 1.5%.

The food and drink figures were different from those in the market research firm's monthly market update, which focus on all expenditure through store tills. Using this monthly data, Morrisons remains above Lidl, with 8.4% grocery market share in the 12 weeks to July 13, just ahead of the discounter's 8.3%.

Lidl is also expected to overtake Morrisons using these figures in the coming months.
