New record set for renewable energy
8th June 2017
For the first time the UK has generated more power through renewable sources of energy than by coal and gas.
The National Grid said on Wednesday some 50.7 per cent of the country's energy was provided by wind, solar, hydro and wood pellet burning sources, the BBC has reported.
Unlike today, Wednesday's conditions at lunchtime were just right for renewable energy production - sunny and windy.
In a tweet the National Grid said: "For the first time ever this lunchtime wind, nuclear and solar were all generating more than both gas and coal combined."
The BBC reported that so much power was being generated by wind turbines that prices fell to a tenth of their normal level.
