Facebook cracks down on fake news
8th May 2017
Facebook has closed down thousands of UK accounts and overhauled its news feed in an attempt to crack down on fake news.
The company has introduced its drive to tackle fake news in the UK just a month before the general election, as reported by the Telegraph . The fake news phenomenon was thought by some to have influenced the outcome of the US election, so the clean-up couldn't come soon enough for us Brits.
Facebook says it has introduced new technology to better identify accounts that spread spam or fake news. Fake news doesn't just damage Facebook, it makes people question all of the news they read online, even from reliable news outlets.
More and more people are rejecting TV and radio news, newspapers and even sites like the BBC online, in favour of picking up their news through social media, whether or not it is accurate.
Here at Punchline, we always try to ensure our news reports are accurate and reliable. We're the number one source of business news in Gloucestershire and there's no need to look elsewhere. But for people who haven't discovered how brilliant we are, we're glad to see Facebook cleaning up their act on fake news.
