Top tips for starting a career in tech
By Sarah Wood | 17th February 2021
Looking to the future, tech is a real growth area for careers. If you are considering a career in tech, Generation UK has some ideas to set you on the right path.
Explore for free
Take advantage of free online resources to explore your interest in tech. You can try an introduction to Python on the Codecademy website or Javascript in three hours on the Free Code Camp website. This is a chance to find out if this is the right line of work for you and demonstrates to employers that you are keen to pursue a career in this sector.
Build your online presence
You probably already have Instagram and Twitter accounts, but you should also be on LinkedIn. Building a professional social presence online is important, as many employers use LinkedIn for recruitment, research and sifting. Find out more about using LinkedIn.
Network with tech professionals
Join webinars to hear first-hand from people in the field about different job roles in the industry. That way, you can start to network online, until it is safe to get back out into the real world. Eventbrite and the Meet Up website are good places to start.
Make a plan
You've got a taste of what roles are out there, have done some networking, and have an eye on the career you've identified as right for you using the Where do I belong in Tech? quiz on the Generation UK website. Now it's time to create a plan of how you will get the qualifications and experience you need to enter the industry. There are lots of routes in, including apprenticeships and traineeships.
Start applying
If you have the qualifications or experience you need, then take a look at the Hackajob website to find the right role for you. If you are looking for an opportunity to simultaneously work and learn then it may be worth exploring apprenticeships on the Gov.uk website website. And the Generation UK website offers 4-12-week free bootcamps to help you upskill, with a guaranteed job interview at the end.
