Teachers strike again

Primary and secondary school teachers in England are staging their fifth strike of the year today (April 27).

Gloucestershire County Council's website reports that 36 schools in the county are partially closed - meaning some year groups are attending school and others are at home, often learning online.

According to the website, three schools in the county are completely closed today.

It is likely more schools are affected, as Punchline is aware of at least one partially closed school which isn't listed on the county council's website.

Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire this morning, Sarah Murphy, district and branch secretary of the National Education Union in Gloucestershire, said: "We're not taking these strike days lightly. We all lose a day's pay.

"We're doing it because we've got to avert an even greater crisis - that being one in which we see fewer teachers, fewer TAs, larger class sizes and more classes, for example in secondary schools, taught by non-specialists."

Another strike is planned for next Tuesday (May 2).
