Gloucestershire schools among the best in UK

Three Gloucestershire state secondary schools have made it into the top 100 in The Sunday Times' Parent Power rankings.

Pate's Grammar School in Cheltenham was ranked fourth in the UK, up two places on last year. Students at the school achieved 91.5% A* to B at A Level and 90.7% grades 9 to 7 at GCSE.

Also making it into the top 100 were Sir Thomas Rich's School and Denmark Road High School, both grammar schools in Gloucester. Sir Thomas Rich's (or 'Tommies' as it is known locally) ranked 63rd and Denmark Road was in 99th position.

Sir Thomas Rich's had 76.9% of A Levels at A* to B and 72.2% of GCSEs at 9 to 7, while Denmark Road had 67.1% of A Levels at A* to B and 73.4% of GCSES at 9 to 7.

Writing on the school's website, Mr Matthew Morgan, headmaster of Sir Thomas Rich's School, said: "I am pleased to see so many Gloucestershire schools feature extremely positively in the newly updated Parent Power Guide. The county is well known for the high quality of its state secondary schools, along with the excellent teacher training opportunities on offer."

In the Southwest, four county schools, all grammar schools, made it into the top 10. Pate's was crowned the Southwest Secondary School of the Year for Academic Performance. Sir Thomas Rich's was ranked third, Denmark Road ranked fifth and girls' grammar school, Stroud High School, was ranked ninth.

Although they didn't make it into the overall top 100, three Gloucestershire comprehensive schools made it into the top five comprehensives in the region. Balcarras School in Cheltenham was ranked number 2 in the Southwest (and number 218 nationally), The Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water was third in the region (and 246th nationally) and Katharine Lady Berkeley's School in Wotton-under-Edge was ranked fourth (and 250th nationally).

In the independent sector, Cheltenham Ladies' College was the only Gloucestershire school to make it into the top 100. It was ranked 36th, with students achieving 91.6% A* to B at Level and 87.8% 9 to 7 at GCSE. The school was also named the number 1 independent school in the Southwest.

Cheltenham College moved up 65 places in the rankings, but it wasn't enough to move it into the UK top 100 or the top 10 in the Southwest.
