DWP joins forces with Tesco

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is joining forces with big companies like Tesco.

The move will create opportunities for people who have struggled to find work, as well as providing essential new staff for Tesco and the other companies.

Mims Davies, minister for employment, spoke to Emma Taylor from Tesco to find out more.

Emma said Tesco has a really good longstanding relationship with Jobcentre Plus and that the Kickstart Scheme is a great example of the way the company is creating new roles and filling vacancies.

Tesco has created 1,000 opportunities under the Kickstart Scheme. The company also has around 1,000 apprenticeships a year and sees them as really valuable.

Emma Taylor, people director at Tesco, said: "I think apprenticeships give our colleagues an opportunity to grow their skills, their confidence, their opportunity to get on. And, as a result, I think the business benefits too.

"The value that the young people get is translated into value for our business, because we've got committed and inspired colleagues who are focused on how they continue to pursue their careers and access opportunities with us."

DWP also has a scheme for older workers - 50 Plus: Choices - and Tesco has found that older workers bring a lot of benefits to the workplace.

Emma said: "We find that they bring prior experience, increased confidence. They bring that into the workplace and help younger workers benefit from that too."

More information, opportunities and support are available on the Government's JobHelp website.
