Thousands expected at village's annual Cow Hunt

Where: Amberley, near Stroud

When: Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, 1pm-5pm

A charity Cow Hunt which annually attracts thousands of visitors to a Gloucestershire village will once again be taking place this early May Bank Holiday weekend.

The Amberley Cow Hunt was first organised 11 years ago after being first thought up by school parent and PTA member, Anne Arthur, who had two children at the school at the time.

Every May Bank Holiday the village of Amberley and parts of the surrounding common sees more than 30 marvellously dressed cows adorn a fun, family route.

Anne said: "Families love to enjoy the beautiful countryside around them, but sometimes they need an incentive for children and grandparents, just to get them started.

"Spotting cows with imaginative names and indulging in a sumptuous feast at the tea tent seems just the thing for the hundreds of families who come back to the cow hunt each year. It's lovely to see so many people having the time of the lives."

The first cow hunt saw just 20 cows around the village and one small tea tent in a parent's garden.

Over the years it has grown in popularity far beyond the imaginations of the committee organising the first Cow Hunt back in 2008. They now welcome thousands of visitors over the Bank Holiday weekend, serve over 3,000 slices of cake, sell over 300 ice creams (even in the wettest of years) and 35 cows (and sometimes a donkey) are now dressed by families and friends of the school.

10% of the takings are sent to the charity Send a Cow, which helps send a cow to feed starving children and help lift a community out of poverty in some of the most deprived areas of Africa

The 2019 Amberley Cow Hunt will take place on Saturday 4th May and Sunday 5th May, 1pm-5pm.
