Get your skates on - Cheltenham could be getting an ice rink
By James Young | 12th July 2019
Cheltenham will be getting an ice rink if plans submitted to the borough council are approved.
Cheltenham BID have submitted an application to the council to install a temporary rink in Imperial Gardens for up to 75 days in the leadup to Christmas.
The ice rink would be operational for 46 days, while 29 days would be required for the construction and dismantling of the rink, marquee and associated structures.
Currently, there is a licence for 70 special event days on Imperial Gardens each year, mainly associated with the town's Festivals programme.
The application would be to extend that by a further 75 days between November and January.
Cheltenham BID have held an initial conversation with the Cheltenham Trust around the usage of the existing town bar, in order to reduce the need for a temporary bar.
The ice rink in Cheltenham would put the town in direct competition with Gloucester, who have a temporary ice rink at the Quays each winter.
