This weekend, September 13-14, Chedworth Roman Villa in the Cotswolds invites visitors to step back almost 2,000 years and meet the characters who once called this grand Roman estate home.

Entrance to Chedworth Roman Villa, cared for by the National Trust, will be free as the event forms part of Heritage Open Days, England's largest festival of history and culture.

The celebrated costumed interpreters, who have become one of Chedworth's most distinctive attractions, will bring the ancient world to life as they portray the Villa's wealthy owner, household staff, and distinguished guests from across the Roman Empire.

Mike Bryan, who plays Censorinus, the owner of the Villa and one of the richest men in Britannia, said: "I can't wait to welcome visitors to 'my Villa' for Heritage Open Days. I will show them around my palatial home and introduce them to Chedworth's famous characters including a respected doctor, the Governor of the Province, the Villa's accountant and the ornatrix (hairdresser) to the ladies of the Villa."

Each character offers insights into Roman social hierarchy, daily life, health and wellbeing, and the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by the Romano-British elite.

Stefan Urbanowski, who plays Dr Quintus, Roman doctor and surgeon to the wealthiest families in the region, said: "People love hearing about Roman medicine, instruments and operations, especially the gory bits. It is an honour to be part of such an experienced cast of characters who bring the story of Chedworth Roman Villa to life."

The Villa's characters draw visitors from across the country. Their expertise in combining research, performance and storytelling creates a unique experience for families.

After meeting these ancient residents, families can explore the ruins of the Villa including some of the finest mosaics in the country, two bathhouses and several examples of Roman underfloor heating (hypocausts). They can also soak up the peace of the Cotswolds countryside or enjoy refreshments from the Chedworth café.
