Plans to transform an empty shop in Hucclecote into a kebab takeaway have raised fears of litter, antisocial behaviour and an unhealthy influence on the community.

The building at 2, Hillview Road is two doors down from The Royal Oak and residents are worried it may encourage drunk people to loiter near homes late at night.

"I am concerned that the presence of a kebab shop, in combination with the existing pub, will contribute to a deterioration of the area's atmosphere and the influx of antisocial behaviour," wrote one objector.

Gloucester City Council is due to debate the plans at a meeting on Tuesday. (Feb 6).

The application has been made by Mahmut Karasan who already runs a nearby cafe and wants to turn the former Headline Hair salon into Kebab Royal.

It is part of a parade of shops which includes Heads and Toes salon and a Co-op.

It would be open for hot food takeaway from 5-11pm Monday to Friday and on Sundays and Bank holidays.

The building has been vacant since 2021 and was unsuccessfully advertised before the applicant purchased it.

A planning statement prepared by RE Design said: "The venture is spearheaded by a local family with a long-standing track record of successfully operating a nearby café.

"This transformation not only revitalises an unoccupied space but also aligns seamlessly with the owners' expertise in delivering high-quality dining experiences."

Gloucester City Council received seven letters of objection about the proposal.

Some raised concerns that it will exacerbate problems already caused by the Papa Johns takeaway opposite.

One wrote: "Children will find it more difficult to make healthier choices when exposed to so many fast food options, Hillview Primary School is on the same road and Gloucester City Council have already approved a pizza take away.

"Local authorities have powers to help shape these environments, including tackling the growth of new fast food outlets."

Others were concerned about issues with illegal parking by delivery drivers and customers eating on the street creating problems with litter and vermin.

A report by the council's planning officer said: "The proposed unit as previously stated has been vacant since 2021 and so the occupancy of the unit would, being an active business, contribute and ensure vitality and viability of the centre."

The application 23/00656/FUL has been recommended for approval.
