VIDEO: PCC Chris Nelson defends his record

Gloucestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner Chris Nelson has defended his record after three years in office.

Mr Nelson announced yesterday that he is standing for re-election under the Conservative banner in May's PCC election..

And he has pulled no punches in having a pop at his Lib Dem rival Martin Surl.

Mr Nelson told Punchline: "I think I've got a good record. I've achieved all my manifesto pledges that I promised in 2021. The force I inherited had serious problems and I've worked hard to sort those out. Another four years will give me a chance to get the force to the level that both me and the chief constable want to see it at."

Mr Nelson said his number one focus was to recruit more police officers.

"I promised 300 extra police and we've got over 400 extra police," he claimed.

Mr Nelson was highly critical of Mr Surl, who had two terms as PCC before being ousted by Mr Nelson in 2021.

"He was in post for nine years," said Mr Nelson. "He's got an absolutely dreadful record. He dropped the force into special measures and anti-social behaviour was among the worst in the country."

Watch our video interview to hear Mr Nelson also speak about the topical subjects of business crime, retail crime, rural crime and police horses.
