The Card Factory continues expansion into Gloucestershire

The Card Factory is due to open another location in Gloucestershire.

The retailer has signed a deal to take over a section of The Food Warehouse in Cheltenham.

It has also applied to Cheltenham Borough Council to put up its signage on the unit at Gallagher Retail Park in Tewkesbury Road.

The greetings card specialist which is headquartered in Wakefield already has six stores in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and Tewkesbury.

The new location is just a few metres from Matalan. In September The Card Factory announced it would be opening concessions in all 223 Matalan branches before the end of the year.

In October Food Warehouse's parent company Iceland Foods Ltd was granted permission to subdivide part of its unit to create an internal sub-let and alter the shopfront to create a separate entrance.

It said The Card Factory planned to hire two part-time and three full-time staff.

This week a Food Warehouse spokesperson told Punchline: "We can confirm that we've reached an agreement for Card Factory to take a section of the store and we look forward to welcoming them to the retail park in the near future."

They said the warehouse would remain open as usual.

The Card Factory's expansion in Gloucestershire comes after a strong year of trading in 2023. It saw sales for the 11 months to December 31 up 10.2% to £476.9million. Like-for-like store sales rose by 7.8% in November and December.

At the time Darcy Willson-Rymer, CEO of The Card Factory said it demonstrated the progress it was making on its strategic growth initiatives.

Last year it signed a deal with Liwa Trading Enterprises to launch roughly 36 stores across countries like the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman and the first one opened in Abu Dhabi in August.
