Dozens of Gloucester businesses could be hit with months of delays due to roadworks starting in Bristol Road next week.

Wales & West Utilities is due to begin essential work on Monday (Jan 8) to upgrade part of the gas network in the area.

Two-way traffic lights will be in place for at least the next four months and motorists have been warned that extra travel time will be needed.

According to Gloucestershire County Council's roadworks map the work will take place near the junction of Clifton Road.

The improvements will make the gas network ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, a greener alternative to traditional gas.

If no major complications arise it is expected to be completed in April.

Mick Gallavin from Wales & West Utilities is managing the work and said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

"We'll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
