Rival bidders for the former Chambers pub building in Gloucester have teamed up to try and secure the lease.

In a surprise twist, entrepreneur Rich Palmer has joined forces with Gloucester Brewery to present a united front to owners Gloucester City Council.

Earlier this year the council offered up the leasehold of the 484 sqm prime site in Kings Square for offers in the region of £60,000 per annum. 

The rundown building has sat empty since the Chambers shut but is a key part of the £200million regeneration of the Kings Quarter as it sits close to the Forum and Debenhams developments.

Two weeks ago Mr Palmer unveiled a vision for The Corner , a cultural cafe bringing together local independent food traders, creatives and musicians.

He already had financial backing from a local businessman for the project and was in talks with co-tenants of the building Jolt and Musicworks about collaborating on the events program.

This morning it was revealed he has now partnered up with the Brewery, which has withdrawn its own proposals for the site.

The brewery, which launched its first beer in Llanthony Road in 2011, will take the helm of bar and beverage operations at the venue.

The menu will include its range of award-winning beers and Foxs Kiln spirits alongside Just Pressed Cider, curated by rugby star Jake Polledri.

Mr Palmer, project manager at The Corner, said: "We are thrilled to welcome Gloucester Brewery onboard as we work towards our shared vision for the former Chambers pub.

"With their unparalleled expertise and commitment to community engagement, we are confident that this partnership will set a new standard for hospitality in Gloucester."

If their bid is successful The Corner will be set up as a Community Interest Company (CIC) with the main income coming from the cafe contract.

Geoff Smith, managing director of Gloucester Brewery, said its charity work makes it a perfect match for The Corner.

In the last year it has actively supported more than 200 Gloucestershire- based charities raising awareness, supporting delivery and fundraising exceeding £60,000.

Mr Smith said: "This partnership marks an exciting chapter for Gloucester Brewery, as we join forces with The Corner to breathe new life into the former Chambers pub.

"Together, we are poised to create a vibrant hub for the community, blending exceptional beverages with top-tier entertainment and unwavering support for local initiatives."

The council put the lease of the property on the market at the start of the year forIt said it was keen for a café culture type venue promoting the region's talented food and drink producers.

The property is still on the market with M&P Property Consultants.

The council has said it cannot comment on offers received or the timeline to a decision due to commercial sensitivities.
