Popular bike shop quits prime site

Amid widespread sadness from Gloucester's cycling community, a popular bike sales and repair shop in the city centre has told customers it will be closing down in April.

In a statement from Eastgate Cycles, based at 78 Eastgate Street, co-owners Graeme Lewis and Lance Fox said: "There are many reasons but all are positive."

With a new signing due for a further five years' lease on the premises, they added: "We felt this was a great time to try something new."

In the remaining weeks of opening, the owners said that they would be focusing on selling remaining stock, in a move that necessitated closure of the workshop – a decision which they say was "not good if you need something fixed, but great news if you want a bargain".

They said: "It goes without saying a big thanks to all who use and have used the shop".

The update added: "Lance and myself are super excited about the future," leaving the shop's social media followers to guess what new form of business the duo may be contemplating.

In reaction, Justin Hudson said: "I am so sorry to read this.... You guys have been an awesome addition to the street! It would be remiss of me not to say a heartfelt thanks for all you did for all of us during those lockdowns. Getting those bikes back up and running.... #Legends!"

David Jones added: "Thanks for all the help you've given me over the years - keeping my bike on the road, teaching me the basics of bike maintenance (which was well needed), getting me to join Eastgate cycling club, and selling me my super slick new Propel. Wishing you the very best on your new venture."
