Parking charges in Gloucester to be increased

Proposals to remove one-hour tariffs across council-run car parks in Gloucester and increase other charges have been approved.

It will mean drivers paying for at least two hours of parking across most of the 15 sites managed by the authority.

Bosses said the change "encourages longer stays to help the city centre economy" and will help raise an extra £560,000.

The plans were approved at a meeting of Gloucester City Council cabinet this week.

The tariff changes mostly affect Hare Lane North and Great Western Road car parks and will see some charges jump up by more than 60%.

Kings Walk and Eastgate car parks will be privatised under the plans with control handed to the shopping centre owners.

The council said tariffs have not been fully reviewed in five years and it needs to bring them in-line with inflation and other authorities.

The proposed increases to the tariffs, the removal of the one-hour tariff and the combining of Zones 1 and 2 into a single Zone A is estimated to increase the car park income by £560,000.

Some of the money will be pumped back into accommodating the expected increase in EV vehicles in the next five years.

It also wants residents to make less car journeys to help the city reach its carbon reduction goals.

Charges at GL1 car park would not be changed due to the "unique relationship between sports and leisure providers and the council". ]

-The cabinet also approved plans to move the council's appointment area  from The Gateway, 92-96 Westgate Street, to the management suite at Eastgate Shopping Centre. It said the change would  make it easier for residents to attend face-to-face appointments and is set to save taxpayers around £80,000 annually in reduced running costs.
