Lidl and M&S are fastest growing supermarkets

Discounter Lidl and high-end favourite, Marks & Spencer, are the UK's fastest growing supermarkets.

Lidl's sales over the last 12 weeks were up 13.2%, while M&S sales rose 11.6%, according to the last data from retail analysts NIQ.

Ocado was another big winner, with sales up 11.3% for the 12 week period.

According to NIQ, total till sales at UK supermarkets saw continued growth of 6.6% in January. The analyst said this reflected a 6.1% slowdown in food inflation, which fell to its lowest rate since June 2022, as reported by Retail Gazette.

Grocery shopping after Christmas was up 1.3% compared to last year, as inflationary pressures eased.

Online grocery shopping was up 6.8% in January and in-store supermarket shopping rose by 5.3%.

Overall, shoppers spent 24% less on food and drink in January than they did in December.
