Cheltenham's Act of Remembrance for Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is a time to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust under Nazi Persecution and in the following genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Members of Cheltenham Hebrew Congregation, Three Counties Liberal Jewish Community, and Cheltenham Borough Council invite you to join them for Cheltenham's Act of Remembrance for this important event.

The evening will be led by Dame Janet Trotter and will include guest speakers, music, prayers and readings, in English and Hebrew. An exhibition will follow that will deepen and expand on the content of the Act of Remembrance. Tea, coffee and cake will be served.

The national theme is 'The fragility of freedom', a theme which resonates with us today as much as in the past. This will be an opportunity for us to remember, learn and reflect, and to inform a peaceful, safer future.

Jennifer Silverston, from the Cheltenham Hebrew Congregation, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is threatened by discrimination, hate and prejudice, and to be on our guard. Freedom is fragile, as is evident in today's world; we must all work hard to ensure that it is never lost."

Cllr Flo Clucas, cabinet member for safety and communities, said: "Whoever we are, whatever the colour of our skin, whatever our religion, whatever our sex, whatever our language, we have a right to be treated with respect.

"The Holocaust and those that have happened since, show us how fragile our rights can be. HMD helps us remember how we should treat others and understand how political propaganda can destroy lives."

Everyone is welcome to attend the event which takes place on Thursday, January 25, from 6.30-7.30pm and you can reserve your space via Eventbrite. The venue will be in a central Cheltenham location, which will be shared the week before.
