Asian food business sets its sights on Gloucester

Tastebuds will be tingling if plans to turn a former electricals store in Gloucester into an Asian food retailer get the go ahead.

Proposals have been submitted to Gloucester City Council to bring the former Denmans in Horton Road back into use.

The 1,716 sqm site sits next to Gloucester Irish Club and was home to the electrical wholesaler for 30 years but it relocated to Eastern Avenue  just over a year ago.

The storage and wholesale unit has sat empty since then but Friends Malayali Asian Store has now applied to take it over.

A planning statement by Brodie Planning Associates Ltd on their behalf said: "The applicant's intention is to sell Asian groceries, including food and household items.

"The rear of the building will remain in storage use in order to store and display the items for sale."

The business is owned by a family from Worcester who have run a convenience store there for 18 years and a few weeks ago opened a new international supermarket in the city centre.

Brothers Dennis and David Mathews have now set their sights on expanding to Gloucestershire.

They have applied to change the use of the building from storage to the display or retail sale of goods other than hot food.

"The intended clientele would be predominantly individuals for household groceries/shopping, with small-scale deliveries of the goods sold to other South Indian retail shops within the wider district and beyond." said the statement.

According to their application the building has been on the market for 11 months and the five expressions of interest received had all been for retail use with no offers to retain the building for storage or distribution.

It added: "Based on this, it is reasonable to conclude that the premises is no longer needed for B8 use and is now redundant."

The application 24/00015/FUL can be viewed on the council's website.
