World premiere at Gloucester Cathedral

After a wait of four years, the Saint Cecilia Singers will perform the world premiere of Neil Cox's Requiem Canticles, commissioned for the choir's 70th anniversary.

The concert on Friday, March 22, will be in aid of Gloucester Cathedral's 'In Tune' Organ and Music campaign.

Paired with Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, the concert 'Psalms and Canticles' will be the highlight of the choir's 75th anniversary season.

The first half of the concert will see the choir sing two famous masterpieces of devotional music: Allegri's Miserere and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms as well as Roderick Williams' Ave Verum Corpus Reimagined.

Joining the Saint Cecilia Singers to perform the premiere of Requiem Canticles are countertenor Tom Lilburn and instrumentalists on organ, horn, harp and percussion. The piece also incorporates a recording of the Bells of Speyer Cathedral.

Composer Neil Cox said: "I was absolutely delighted to be commissioned to write a piece for the Saint Cecilia Singers, for some of my happiest memories of music-making have been associated with this premier-league choir.

"I have written the piece with the famous Gloucester acoustic in mind. I wanted to have moments of immense sonority sitting beside passages of real intimacy, and I hope I might be able to give full rein to the choir's technical assurance."

All proceeds from this concert will go to Gloucester Cathedral's In Tune Organ and Music campaign. Tickets are £20 (£22 on the door) or available from Gloucester Cathedral website.

The In Tune campaign aims to raise £3 million by 2026, which will fund the refurbishment and renewal of the Cathedral's famous organ, as well as revitalising the musical education that is offered to hundreds of musicians of all ages.

By supporting the In Tune campaign, you will enable Gloucester Cathedral to:

  • Refurbish and renew the historic organ
  • Continue to build on and deliver musical education of the highest standard to hundreds of young musicians
  • Protect the musical heritage for the future
  • Enable the cathedral to live out their vision of being in tune with heaven and in touch with daily life.

The Saint Cecilia Singers is Gloucester Cathedral's chamber choir - an auditioned choir of around 28 enthusiastic and gifted amateur and semi-professional singers. It performs up to six concerts per year including an annual Christmas concert at Gloucester Cathedral as well as taking part in the Cathedral Choirs Days and occasional Evensongs.
