The Postcard Series at Cheltenham gallery

Spring Cheltenham is absolutely delighted to showcase a new collection of paintings by the incomparable Jon Wealleans.

Titled 'The Postcard Series' for obvious reasons, this group of 15 finely observed paintings brings his pop art sensibility to the tradition of the floral still life.

Using the bright primary palette he is known for and his curation of rare pieces of ceramic and glassware from the Art and Craft and Art Deco movements, alongside postcards of well-known artwork from history; these pieces are full of precious and surprising details in the full spectrum of joyful colour.

Jon Wealleans said: My intentions with these oil paintings was to subvert the formal tradition of still life 'vases of flowers' often sitting on a table cloth with a murky treacle background.

"I juxtaposed postcards of some of my favourite paintings and the content of those bears little relationship to the main images. I chose reasonably familiar and fairly well known paintings using a trompe loeil technique: when I originally posted some of the paintings on social media, people asked me WHY I was pinning postcards on my paintings.

"The painted postcards are actually about 15% smaller than the actual cards."

Jon Wealleans' exhibition runs at Spring Cheltenham until Monday, October 25.
