Stroud Valleys Project summer of love...for nature!

Stroud conservation and community-building charity Stroud Valleys Project (SVP) has a bumper summer of events coming up.

The charity, which teams up with people to protect wildlife habitats across the district, has a packed calendar of workshops, walks and talks lined up from June until September.

Saturday, June 10, sees a walk to explore the Orchids of Edge Common, led by Paul Griffiths. Paul is a grazier, or cattle-rearer with a deep understanding of wildflowers and their symbiotic relationship with farming.

On Sunday, June 11, you can join rag-rugging maven Sue Ratcliffe to create your own wreath from old clothes, just in time for Summer Solstice.

Take part in a Citizen Science event on Monday, June 12, when SVP's experts will be in Stratford Park from 1pm until 7pm to record the many and varied species that live in the park. It's free for everyone, but booking is required through SVP's website.

On Wednesday, June 14, SVP is joining forces with the National Trust to discover the rare and not-so-rare wildflowers and grasses that make the area's commons so special. The event is part of the Landscapes of the Lark festival - as is Commons Connection, a creative writing morning on Sunday, June 18, led by poet Billy Head, which aims to explore the connections between past and present, and between humans and other species.

On Monday, June 19, attention turns to a different kind of output: dung! Cowpats are like miniature Serengeti watering holes for our local wildlife - discover their importance in the ecosystem in this special session, presented in partnership with Stroud Nature and part of the Landscapes of the Lark festival.

Wednesday, June 21, is Summer Solstice; SVP will be leading a twilight session on Selsley Common to listen to the song of the skylark as the sun sets on the longest day of the year; by contrast, on Saturday, June 24, raptor expert Steve Watson hopes to spot up to seven different birds of prey over at Symonds Yat.

On Sunday, June 25, Shropshire artist Maggie Humphry will be leading a workshop on using pen and ink to create artwork with a natural focus, and there's also a session building bug hotels with Stroud Buzz Club as part of SVP's Garden Guardians project.

There are more events planned for July, August and September; visit SVP's website for details.

Friends of SVP obtain a 20% discount on most events, as well as supporting the charity's work across Stroud, Cam, Berkeley, Stonehouse and Bisley.
