Snowdrop Weekend at the Museum in the Park

The Museum in the Park in Stroud reopened yesterday (Tuesday) after being closed for its annual deep clean.

Staff have been super busy working away behind the scenes and can't wait to welcome you back!

Don't miss the museum's Snowdrop Weekend with Avon Bulbs on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January.

The snowdrops in the museum's Walled Garden bring cheer in the first months of the New Year. The special snowdrop collection is inspired by the catalogue of the former Giant Snowdrop Company of Hyde, Stroud, which introduced the first mail order service for snowdrops. This meant that in the late 1950s and early 60s, keen gardeners rather than a restricted group of the 'well connected' could now buy species snowdrops, some of the rare varieties that up until this time had not been readily available.

There is so much variety in these little flowers, keenly observed by Galanthophiles, lovers of snowdrops. The Walled Garden display has been put together thanks to research and help from local Galanthophile collectors. Volunteers will be on hand to tell you more on this special 'Snowdropping' weekend.

Galanthophiles can head straight up to the Garden Pavilion where Avon Bulbs will be selling some very special snowdrops to add to your own garden displays.

Indoors, as well as re-visiting the fascinating museum displays, you can immerse yourself in a very special new exhibition: 'Ice Age' explores half a million years of ancient local history. From mammoths to man-caves, from treeless tundra to sultry swamps and fascinating forests, the Ice Age is full of surprises!
