Photographing Gloucester street by street

From October to May 2022, Hundred Heroines is inviting the people of Gloucester to capture the hidden narrative of the city through photography.

Dubbed Glostorama!, a title which references the "spectacle" of a panoramic view, the project presents an opportunity for all Gloucester residents to share personal photographs which convey their experience of the locality.

Over the project's lifespan, images will be collected depicting all 2,000+ of Gloucester's streets. As the photographic mosaic begins to take shape, the images will be compiled into a 'living archive', which will be accessible online around the globe.

Seeking direct input from the people who know Gloucester best, Glostorama! aims to diversify the cultural heritage of the city and preserve memories of its vibrant milieu.

Del Barrett, Hundred Heroines founder and chair, expressed her enthusiasm for the project's storytelling capacity. She said: "I'm so excited about Glostorama! and can't wait to see the results. Every street has a story to tell, and we're looking forward to hearing these stories and meeting the people behind them."

While people are welcome to get involved individually, Hundred Heroines is hoping the project will foster a creative community. A 'Meetup' group will be co-ordinated to facilitate shared photo-walks, enabling participants to connect with others while staying active in a supportive environment.

Although the genesis of Glostorama! is a celebration of photography, engaging with the outdoors via imaginative means can positively affect mental and physical wellbeing - a potential Glostorama! endorses.

Alongside the initiative itself, which will culminate in an outdoor exhibition as well as a virtual archive, a series of online talks and workshops from industry professionals -- including several of the photographic heroines -- will illuminate the context of Glostorama! and provide an insight into inspiring work by some of the leading women in photography.

With the project running well into 2022, participants will have plenty of scope to take to the streets and re-frame the familiar. Those wishing to take part can submit their photographs to Hundred Heroines using the hashtag #glostorama on Instagram and keep up with photo challenges via the Hundred Heroines website.

Hundred Heroines is the only UK charity dedicated to advancing public awareness of women in photography. As women photographers, 'Heroines' challenge how we see the world, push artistic and social boundaries, and highlight human rights issues.

Through innovative exhibitions and events, Hundred Heroines showcases the invaluable contribution women make - and have made - to the visual arts and to society, while building a living archive that aims to increase public appreciation of their pioneering work and transformational humanitarian impact.

Achieving independent charitable status in 2020, the charity has necessarily only been working online, but from 2022 will have a dedicated space in Gloucester for women in photography.
