Hoping for a big turnout on Civic Day

A call has gone out for volunteers in Cheltenham to make Civic Day this Saturday (June 17) a big success.

Volunteers are meeting up at Parmoor at 9:30am and will be carrying out weeding, graffiti removal, sticker removal, litter picking, sweeping and washing down various items of street furniture.

Hugh Curran, chair of Successful Streets Group, a grouping within Cheltenham Civic Society, said: "This year, we will be cooperating with Cheltenham BID's team and local businesses to do as much of a tidy-up as is possible.

"The main focus will be on the Strand, that section of the High Street from John Lewis to Sainsburys Local on the junction with the Bath Road. If we get a big turnout, we can widen our efforts. As you know, there's plenty of things to tidy up all around the centre of town!"

Full details are available on the Civic Society website about all aspects of the morning. To help them judge numbers, they ask volunteers to send a simple email to civicday@cheltcivicsoc.org to let them know.

Hugh added: "We hope you can come along and do whatever you are comfortable with doing. We could also do with coffee makers and note-takers to record issues that will need the follow-on attention of Ubico or CBC or GCC."

Everything you will need will be provided - gloves, black bags, tools etc but if you wish to bring along your own tools such as hoes or weed brushes, please do so.
