Crowds enjoy a 'real old-fashioned day out'

Thousands of people flocked to Highnam Court yesterday (Sunday, June 27) to enjoy the rescheduled classic car event in aid of the Pied Piper Appeal.

The event had been due to take place the previous Sunday but was postponed due to a poor weather forecast. And organisers were delighted that their decision proved a good one as yesterday's forecast showers didn't materialise and the event took place in "perfect conditions".

An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people turned out to see more than 200 classic cars and trucks in what was the Pied Piper Appeal's first event since March 2020.

Pied Piper Appeal chair Nick Broady said: "It was amazing. We were blown away by the amount of support we had. We were very, very busy. We are very lucky to have so many volunteers.

Mr Broady said they were today still counting up the proceeds but he thought Pied Piper had done "very well" out of it.

Julie Kent MBE, vice chair of the Pied Piper Appeal, said: "We were thrilled to see over 200 classic cars arrive from 7.30am and by 10am the grounds were brimming with fantastic and some rare classics with impressive trucks from across the country.

"So many people came to look around that we ran out of cake! It felt like a real old-fashioned day out."

The Pied Piper Appeal makes a difference to sick and disabled children in Gloucestershire.
