City gears up for historic celebration

Gloucester History Festival kicks off on Saturday (September 4) with the city's historic celebration of Gloucester Day.

The Cross Streets of Gloucester will come alive with stalls, stands, lively performances (on the stage on Southgate Street) and all the pomp and ceremony of the traditional Gloucester Day parade through the four main gated streets, led by the Mayor and Sheriff of Gloucester, in full Civic Regalia.

The Gloucester Day timetable:

11am: Mock Mayor of Barton Parade and Mayor Making Ceremony

12 noon: Gloucester Day Service St Mary DeCrypt Church (Discover Decrypt)

2pm: Gloucester Day Parade

Gloucester Day traditionally marks the launch of the festival and raises morale in the City. The Gloucester Day event is the reinstatement of the original Gloucester Day - a day of celebration on the lifting of the siege of Gloucester - in 1643. This occasion was celebrated annually for centuries.

Alan Myatt, who has been Gloucester town crier for over 30 years, is the driving force behind the event, which started in 2008.

He said: "This event is designed to install and promote pride in our historic city by creating interest in its rich heritage and colourful past."
