A cold-water challenge in aid of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice is being held for the second time this December.

'The Big Dip' takes place on Friday 1 December at the Sandford Lido in Cheltenham and it's hoped that residents will 'jump in' the 5-10 ºC waters while helping to raise vital funds.

For a £10 donation, swimmers aged 16 and over can enjoy up to 45 minutes in the water, kick-started by Father Christmas himself, as well as festive music and warm refreshments for all.

The idea for the teeth-chattering charity challenge came from a group of Sue Ryder Nurses who last year wanted to raise money to support people needing their care.

Sue Ryder nurse Carly Baird, who was one of the hospice staff to take on the challenge, said: "Last year's dip was an absolutely exhilarating experience and I can't wait to join my colleagues and the community as we make a splash for Sue Ryder at the 2023 event!

"Money raised from the dip will help Sue Ryder continue to be there for families going through the most difficult times of their lives. See you all poolside!"

Sandford Parks Lido, on Keynsham Road in Cheltenham, will be opening the site especially for the event, with gates opening at 11.30am ahead of The Big Dip at midday.

Adam McAnoy, operations supervisor at Sandford Lido, said: "We are proud to be hosting and supporting Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice for 'The Big Dip' once again this year after a very successful event in 2022.

"We know how important these funds are to the hospice and hope to see as many people as possible here on 1st December to help support this brilliant charity."

The 85-strong dippers who took part last year helped to raise more than £15,000 for their local Sue Ryder hospice, which provides expert and compassionate palliative care to people with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families.

Tamsin Grainger, community fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, who will also be braving the cold for the hospice, added: "December is the season to support your local hospice so that we can provide more care to more people and support families through the most difficult times of their lives.

"I know from taking part myself last year what an amazing time you will have so I would encourage everyone to sign up today!"
