A collaborative exhibition of work by local artist Abigail Waddell and photographer Stephen Shepherd opens at the Corinium Museum, Cirencester, on Friday (March 4).

In this show - 'Transient Light and the Landscape' - the artists combine their different styles of recording the landscape into a single set of creative images all exploring the nature of light, landscape and capturing that transient moment, never to be seen exactly the same again.

Abigail is a contemporary landscape painter working mainly in oils. Living in the Cotswolds, she paints mainly local landscapes, inspired when out and about walking in local fields, villages and towns.

Abigail is keen on painting scenes related to her favourite places in the UK and in particular NW Scotland (where she has spent every summer for the past 25 years), also Wales, Devon and Cornwall.

Often sketching and painting en plein air, she will also finish works or create larger works based on sketches when back in the Studio in Ewen. She favours oils for landscapes of land or sea in which the light and, in particular, the clouds demand an impressionistic approach, to allow the piece to reflect more than simply a snapshot of what is in front of her, and give the viewer a role in interpretation.

Now based in Cirencester, Stephen has spent the last 25 years working on documentary-led projects for all of the UK's national press titles, magazines, corporate and marketing clients.

Stephen's creative photography concentrates on found shapes and the interaction of light in the landscape. Often creating abstract images with bold colours, he offers an alternative view to traditional landscape photography.

Rarely returning to the same spot twice, he works in an almost documentary style in the landscape, "finding" the picture and making the best of it at that moment in time rather than planning a location and setting up for that "perfect" light.

"I feel it's about the emotion of the location more than what or where it is," Stephen said.

As with Abigail's process, once a scene has been shot he will return to the studio and work on the images to create the emotional response he felt at the time of taking the picture.This results in the abstract style he enjoys resulting in his non traditional landscape photography.
