A celebration of ancient crafts at Chedworth Roman Villa

On Saturday 28 October, the National Trust's Chedworth Roman Villa in the Cotswolds will be hosting Roman Crafts Day.

Visitors will get the chance to see demonstrations of several ancient techniques. Master mosaicists will reveal how Chedworth's fine floors were created, metalworkers will recreate Roman era artefacts, and spinners and weavers will demonstrate how to work with ancient wools and fabrics.

Mike Bryan, who plays the character of Appian, the Master Mosaicist, said: "Few people are aware that there are over 330,000 mosaic pieces in Chedworth's grand dining room mosaic. Can you imagine the skill needed to craft these pieces into the intricate patterns we see today?"

Families will also be able tackle puzzles and games built around the theme of Grand Designs. They will experience what it is like to build the Villa's walls, create a fresco, lay a mosaic and carve a statue. Several mosaic and jewellery specialists will also show off their creations and interact with visitors.

Pack a picnic and enjoy the autumn colours in this peaceful part of the Cotswolds.

Roman Crafts Day starts at 11am and finishes at 3.30pm. The rest of Chedworth Roman Villa will be open from 10am until 5pm. Normal National Trust admission rates apply.
