Top five things to do in Gloucestershire this weekend

If you are struggling to decide how to spend your weekend, here are our top picks.

1# Enjoy unrivalled music talent at Wychwood Music Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse

One of the summer's best-loved family festivals has a brand new look and feel and a programme that is set to surprise, delight and entertain this summer.

Headlining the main stage will be the undisputed kings of flamenco, salsa and pop infusion The Gipsy Kings, who will be delighting crowds with their irresistible marriage of traditional Spanish and Western pop music.

Wychwood's plentiful programme of arts, culture and family activities returns, and for 2018 there will be an abundance of games and mayhem to get involved in.

From world class street theatre, side-splitting comedy shows, thought-provoking talks and story-telling from leading children's authors, all ages have been lovingly catered for. And there's plenty of workshops to take part in too.

2# Entertain the kids at the city's first-ever International Children's Day at Gloucester Park

Polish Association Gloucestershire, together with all the partners, are cordially inviting you to the first-ever International Children's Day in Gloucester.

The event will take place on the Saturday, June 2, in Gloucester Park between 12-5pm.

There will be many attractions to include inflatables, pony rides, theatre performances, magic show, mascots appearances, sports activities, face painting and much more.

Just turn up with your families and join in the fun!

3# Step back in time at Lechlade Annual Vintage Rally & Country Show

The fourth Lechlade Annual Vintage Rally & Country Show takes place at Rough Grounds Farm this weekend (June 2-3).

This year's event will include classic cars, classic motorcycles, commercial vehicles, collections, miniature steam and tractors.

There will also be a model tent, classic caravans and craft, and for the children a fun fair, bouncy castle, face painting, the West Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary and much more.

This year's Ring events are, on the Saturday, Blue Cross Fun Dog Show and Great Western Youth Band, while on Sunday there will be Morris Dancing & Britannia Majorettes.

Other attractions include boot sales, trade stands, auto jumble, food and refreshments. Car parking is free.

4# Feel the heat at Cheltenham's Street Chilli Fiesta

The contest sees chilli enthusiasts compete to prove they can eat a hotter chilli than their rivals.

Miss Cheltenham Katy van Hemelryk will be on hand to present the winner with their award.

The fiesta is being organised by Chilli Fest UK and Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID) and will see 15 chilli produce stalls in Cambray Place from 10am-5.30pm on Sunday 3rd June.

Clash of the Titans is open to adults only and starts with mild and flavourful - but contestants know there is a kick coming.

Last year's fiesta saw hundreds of people enjoying the heat as they selected some of the country's best chilli based jams, chutneys and marinades.

5# Spectate the combat sport of shin-kicking at the Cotswold Olimpicks

Thousands of spectactors are set to flock to the Robert Dover's Cotswold Olimpick Games, which has a history dating back over 400 years. The festivities return this year after last year's event was cancelled.

One of the undoubted highlights will be shin-kicking, a combat sport that involves two contestants attempting to kick each other on the shin to force their opponent to the ground.

Shin-kicking originated in England in the early 17th Century and has been described as an English martial art. It was included in the 1951 revival of the Cotswold Olimpicks, which now features the World Shin-kicking Championships.

The matches are observed by a referee, or stickler, who determines the match score in a best of three competition. Steel toe caps are now banned, and the use of straw is allowed to pad shins.

Apart from shin-kicking, Cotswold Olimpick events include 'spurning the barre' (an old English version of the Scottish tossing the caber) and tug o' war.

The evening culminates with a spectacular torchlit procession down into Chipping Campden where there is music and dancing in the Square until midnight.
