Phoenix Festival shortlisted for cash boost

Where: Abbey Grounds, Cirencester

When: August 26 and 27, 2017

Cirencester's Phoenix Festival is one of three shortlisted projects to receive a cash boost this summer.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, Bags of Help, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 - all raised from the 5p bag levy - being awarded to local community projects.

The Phoenix Festival offers two days of music, dance and family fun over the August Bank Holiday weekend and is one of the best free summer community events in the Cotswolds' calendar.

Acts announced for the festival so far this year include Madness tribute The Los Palmas 6 and David Bowie tribute David Live.

The event is completely organised by volunteers and is the brainchild of Ozone Youth Club, supported by Cirencester Town Council and Cirencester Community Development Trust.

Proud to be in its fifth year, it continues to provide an opportunity for the community to be involved in an exciting and uniquely free music event.

Lucy Cordrey, Phoenix Festival Grants Committee member, said: "We are over the moon to have been shortlisted.

"An award like this makes a significant contribution to the Phoenix fundraising pot and is such a great way for the local community to get involved. So please do help us bag a massive share of the funds next time you go shopping."

Shoppers are invited to cast their vote throughout May and June using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop. Stores taking part in the voting are Cirencester Farrell Close Metro, Chesterton Cirencester Express and Cirencester Extra at Kingsmeadow.

Lindsey Crompton, Head of Community at Tesco, said: "There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can't wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities."
