Hartpury University is excited to be hosting a special screening of the inspirational new film about Hartpury graduate, world record-holder and Paralympian Mel Nicholls, tomorrow evening (Tuesday, December 3).

The film Dream Big follows Mel's incredible attempt to beat the world record for handcycling the length of mainland Britain from Land's End to John O'Groats.

The presentation of Dream Big at Hartpury, which is one of the first venues in the UK to be screening the film to students, staff and members of the public from 6.30pm.

Before starting the Handcyle Britain challenge, Mel underwent testing in the state-of-the-art human performance laboratory at the new £8.8 million Sports Academy at Hartpury.

After the gruelling trip, she returned to Hartpury for further testing in the human performance laboratory to analyse the effects of the 874-mile journey on her body.

Mel, who competed at the 2012 Paralympics in London and the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, was also a guest speaker at Hartpury last month when she provided students with an insight into the important work that goes into supporting elite athletes.

The evening, which will be presented by Professor Stephen Draper from Hartpury, will also include a question-and-answer session with Mel and members of the Sports Science team at Hartpury.

Mel Nicholls, who graduated from Hartpury with an Equine Science degree, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled that Dream Big is being screened at Hartpury because I have great memories of the place as a student and the sports science team played a really big part in preparing me for the challenge.

"The film captures the highs and lows and the rollercoaster of emotions that the team went through on the journey - Friction Collective who produced it have done a great job."

Professor Draper added: "We felt extremely proud and honoured when Mel gave us the opportunity to screen Dream Big at Hartpury.

"The Handcyle Britain challenge was an extraordinary challenge for Mel to take on and we're delighted to be able to tell her inspirational story to our students, staff and members of the public who are, of course, welcome to attend.

"The Q&A session will also provide students, staff and members of the public with an excellent opportunity to further enhance their knowledge of sports science, so I'm sure it's going to be a memorable evening."
