Mock Mayor of Barton to host FUNtastic Fair

Viva Andrada O'Flynn made history when she became the Mock Mayor of Barton at Gloucester Day earlier this month.

She is the first British Filipina to hold this historic role and was proclaimed Mock Mayor for 2025 to 2026 during a day which filled the city with colour, history and community spirit.

The tradition of the Mock Mayor dates back to the aftermath of the Siege of Gloucester in 1643, when Barton lay outside the city boundaries. In playful defiance, locals elected their own "mayor." What began as satire has grown into a cherished civic custom that blends humour, heritage and pride in community identity.

Viva, a Filipina British entrepreneur, writer, artist and community leader, also serves as secretary of the Filipino Association of Gloucestershire. Known for her dedication to cultural and community work, she pledged to bring joy, inspiration, creativity and togetherness to her term.

Gloucester Day itself was once again brought to life by the tireless efforts of Alan Myatt, the city's legendary Town Crier and long-time organiser of the event. His leadership ensured another day of celebration that honoured Gloucester's history while uniting its people.

Carrying this spirit forward, Viva will host the FUNtastic Fair on Saturday, November 15, from 10 am to 3 pm at St Mary de Crypt, Southgate Street, Gloucester. This free event will bring families together with stalls, entertainment and activities, and will showcase the best of Gloucester's creativity, diversity and community spirit.

The fair also coincides with Gloucester's Lantern Parade and Christmas Lights Switch On, making it one of the highlights of the city's festive season.

Viva said: "The FUNtastic Fair will be a chance to celebrate what makes Gloucester special and I look forward to welcoming everyone to take part."

With her passion for culture and collaboration, Viva's year as Mock Mayor promises to bring fresh energy to this historic tradition, ensuring Barton's voice continues to be heard and celebrated as part of Gloucester's vibrant future.
