Rat graffiti sparks Banksy rumours

Is it a Banksy or just a clever imitation? A mysterious piece of graffiti art on the offices of a Gloucester business have sparked debate.

Simon Ford, MD of Allstone and Speedy Skips, was alerted early this morning that some graffiti had appeared on the wall at his site by one of his staff.

He said: "The first I knew about it was at quarter to five this morning when one of the lads phoned me when I was on my way in to work and said somebody had done some graffiti on the office wall."

The graffiti shows a rat running inside a green recycling logo. The silhouetted rat is a familiar motif of the mysterious and anonymous street artist who started out in Bristol before going on to become an international celebrity.

Simon said: "It certainly looks like a Banksy, definitely."

Whoever put it on the wall of the office block knew how to get into the site and put it up when it was closed over the weekend, he said. The CCTV was taped over.

He added: "If it is a Banksy it's probably worth some money, but what are you going to do - chop half the office block down to take it off?"

As to why here and why now - Simon said: "I'm only assuming there's a message in there, perhaps about recycling, your guess is as good as mine."

Perhaps it is linked to the current Extinction Rebellion protests in London and elsewhere.
