A long-awaited project to bring a new skate park and pump track to Bishops Cleeve is gearing up for construction.

Final details for the facility are expected to be signed off by Tewkesbury Borough Council in the next few weeks and work can then begin.

The tracks will be built on a 2,500sqm portion of Bishops Cleeve Sports Field in Cheltenham Road and replace the existing "substandard and underutilised" skate and BMX tracks.

Bishops Cleeve Parish Council has been working on the project since 2018 when a year 9 school pupil asked if improvements could be made to the existing facilities.

Improvements were made to the existing tracks but in 2019 more people came forward asking for a permanent refurbishment to allow the facilities to be used year round.

The project was halted by Covid and resurrected in 2021 when the parish council decided to manage and fund the project.

The main design was approved in November 2023 and the parish council has now submitted an application with more details of the drainage scheme.  It is due to be determined by the borough council by no later than June 21.

Parish councillors hope work will begin on construction this summer and when complete the park will encourage more people to take up cycling and other wheeled sports.

The skate park has been designed by Dorset company Maverick Skateparks — a skater-run firm which specialises in spray concrete skate parks.

It has designed dozens of skate and cycle parks across the country, including five in Gloucestershire located in Churchdown, Coleford, Stroud, Moreton-in-Marsh and Tetbury.

Architrail Velosolutions UK, based in Bristol will deliver the pump track project.
