Punchline Talks! The B!G Interview with John Trolan, CEO of The Nelson Trust

The Nelson Trust is a charity based in Brimscombe in Stroud. It's been established for about 37 years and employs about 230 people with an annual income of around £9 million.

The B!G Interviews are sponsored by Cheltenham-based IT solutions company Infrastar.

The Nelson Trust works with people with a range of social problems, including drugs, alcohol, mental health, domestic abuse, street sex working and troubled families. It has women's centres in Gloucester, Swindon, Bridgwater, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea and at Eastwood Park Prison in Wotton-under-Edge.

Dublin-born John Trolan has worked for the charity for 25 years and took over as CEO in 2013.

He says: "It's quite intense but it's very rewarding work. We are very lucky to have some fantastic people working with us and some fantastic supporters."

John moved to London in the mid-1980s and previously worked as a civil servant and in the private sector in retail management and has also been self-employed.

"England is a country that has given me a lot of chances," he says. "I love it here and I'm proud to be part of it."

Now living in his adopted Gloucestershire, he feels very much at home.

The Nelson Trust's income is made up of 80% contract income - which involves competing with other organisations for the right to contract - and 20% fundraising.

"We are a small organisation and it's not easy competing against sometimes global organisations," says John. "It's a terrible thing that we have to compete as charities but that's the way of the world. I'm so grateful to the people who support us because they support us year in and year out."
