WSP and Randall & Payne serve up a megaquiz

Some of the finest (or at least the most willing) minds in Gloucestershire got together last night to pit their collective brain power against each other for a supersize pub quiz aiming to boost the coffers for two vital Gloucestershire charities.

Co-hosted by Cheltenham accountants Randall and Payne and Stroud and Gloucester-based WSP Solicitors, more than 150 people partnered up to form 23 teams at Kings Stanley's village hall to see who could emerge as the most knowledgeable across subjects that varied from politics and pop hits to obscure place names and Pluto (both planetary and Disney).

And along with the challenge of going ten rounds on general (and not-so-general!) knowledge, a raffle collection was also held to help boost the coffers for Randall and Payne's selected charity, Maggie's Centre, and WSP's Young Gloucestershire.

In all, more than £2,300 was raised by the event to be split between the key charities.

Jo Kline, event organiser for Randall and Payne, said: "It'd great to be able to have events like this to keep up this work. This was the twelfth annual quiz we have co-hosted with WSP and every year it just gets easier to run, thanks to the momentum and support of our hosts.

"We were specially grateful to Pizzeria Molto Bene, of Quedgeley, who supplied pizza at a special price and helped to make sure there were no mutinies! Kings Stanley Village Hall are also, as ever, stars for holding the event and helping us with volunteers."

Maggie's Centre is part of an international network of friendly centres that extend the NHS's work in combatting cancer, Maggie's Cheltenham being based at the General Hospital where the team offers a friendly place for patients to stop by, chat over a cuppa and gain wellbeing help and advice in a non-clinical setting.

Anna Mason, Maggie's fundraising manager said: "It was a tough quiz, especially those Disney questions! Once again, Randall and Payne delivered for us, with a great evening and they should be so proud of what they have achieved for us - the money from the night is enough for us to help 50 people who come to us for support."

Young Gloucestershire is a countywide charity that supports young people who are facing challenges in their lives.

Tom Jones, YG head of income generation said: "The quiz was a great success and, thanks to WSP, a great opportunity for us to explain the crucial work our charity does in helping commities across Gloucestershire by offering help and opportunities for disadvantaged young people.

"Whether it be a disruptive home life, caring for a family member or coping with a mental health issue, young people turn to us for help and we offer them practical ways to find confidence and develop the skills they need to get on track and to move into a job, education or training."

After a mid-way pizza break, the teams continued to battle until "Ash...it" emerged as the overall winner by just half a point, pipping Shed 7 to the top spot, who were followed by Maggies and the Lads, in third place.

A large variety of spoils went to the winners while raffle prizes, kindly donated by a broad range of Gloucestershire businesses, were also eagerly snapped up.
