Woman remanded in custody for robbery in Stroud

A 40-year-old woman accused of robbing a disabled man of his motorised mobility scooter shortly before he was found collapsed - and later died - has been remanded in custody by Cheltenham Magistrates.

Kimberley Hawkins, of no fixed address, was told that her case is being committed to Gloucester Crown Court and she will make a first appearance there on February 16.

She spoke on Thursday (January 26) only to confirmed her name and date of birth. Wearing a grey top in the dock, she did not enter any plea to the single charge that she robbed Neil Shadwick, 63, of Archway Gardens, Stroud, of his motorised mobility scooter, of unknown value, in the area of Stratford Road, Stroud on January 22.

The court was told that Mr Shadwick suffered from Parkinson's Disease and had recently also suffered a stroke and had difficulty communicating verbally.

Magistrates heard that Mr Shadwick was found by a member of staff at Tesco superstore at Stratford Park, Stroud, at around 6am on January 22, having been spotted at the ATM during the early hours of that Sunday morning. The temperature at the time was minus four degrees.

Mr Shadwick was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where he later died.

Prosecutor Cathy Thornton opposed bail and outlined the crown case to the court. Defence lawyer Clare Buckley said that she was content with her client being remanded in custody.

Presiding Justice Simon White told Hawkins: "We are not granting you bail because of the seriousness of the offence. You will be remanded in custody until the next hearing at Gloucester Crown Court on February 16."

The court was told Mr Shadwick had been found collapsed in the Tesco supermarket on but died later in hospital.

Mr Shadwick's mobility scooter was found later that same day Sunday, January 22, at around 9am abandoned in Bisley Old Road, Stroud.

Ms Hawkins had originally been arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery following the death of Mr Shadwick. She remains under investigation for murder as enquiries continue to establish the cause of Mr Shadwick's death.

A police spokesman has previously stated: "A post-mortem examination has returned inconclusive results about Mr Shadwick's cause of death.

"Further testing will need to be carried out to determine the cause of death and a police investigation is ongoing."

Gloucester Crown Court heard last week that Mr Shadwick had been the victim of a robbery in his home last year by Anthony Gardiner, 64, and Serena Hotchkins, 23, who robbed him of his wallet and mobile phone on May 10, 2022.

The pair were jailed for the robbery with Gardiner receiving a five-year prison sentence while Hotchkins will be serving a 43-month prison term.
