WHSmith launches ‘just walk out’ store

WHSmith has debuted a checkout-free store, but we're unlikely to see one in Gloucestershire for a long time yet.

The new store is at New York City's LaGuardia airport, as reported by Charged Retail.

WHSmith is using Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology for the store, which means shoppers only need to scan a QR code to enter, before picking up the items they want to buy and leaving the store, without ever visiting a till.

A network of cameras and sensors is able to detect when an item is removed from a shelf and by who, before charging the customer once they have left the store.
