Warning: Make sure you avoid this junction this weekend

Motorists have been told to steer clear of a major county roundabout this weekend if at all possible.

It's the last phase of £2.756 million improvement works at Over roundabout, near Gloucester with lane closures and significant delays expected.

County council crews will complete resurfacing work and the authority said: "It is advised that commuters avoid the roundabout if possible as journeys are likely to take significantly longer."

The road closures from 7pm Friday 10 August until 6am August 13 are:

A40 Westbound from Longford Roundabout to Over Roundabout

A417 Northbound from Over Causeway to Over Roundabout

A417 Southbound from Over Roundabout to Over Causeway

The newly surfaced roads, including the A40 Eastbound from Highnam to Longford with access to the A417 Northbound to Maisemore, the A417 Southbound from Maisemore to Longford through Over only, and the A417 Northbound Over Causeway Spur to Westbound A40 towards Highnam.

Full diversions will be in place and signposted, and more information can be found online at: www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/A40-Over

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council said: "We are aware that the road closures last weekend caused issues for commuters, but we hope everyone agrees that the smooth new surface was worth the brief disruption. This is the last weekend closure for this project and again we'd advise people avoid the roundabout as there will be significant delays.

"The Over works are part of our £150 million investment into the county's roads and once it's finished it will make a great difference everyone's journey. I'd like to thank everyone for their patience whilst we work on this project, I promise the benefits will be worth it."

The project includes widening the Westbound and Southbound approaches; adding a third lane within the roundabout; building new retaining walls and putting in upgraded LED lighting.

The changes to Over will increase the capacity of the roundabout, relieve congestion and save commuters time. Once completed, it will reduce delays on the A40 east-west and the A417 north-south approaches.
