Warning: County road to close at nightime for essential resurfacing work

Traffic will be diverted off of a major county road which is to close overnight for a month while repairs take place.

The busy route between Gloucester and Monmouth is being resurfaced overnight from 19th July as part of Gloucestershire County Council's £150m investment into the county's highways.

The A4136 is an important route for the Forest of Dean and this stretch of the road needs to be resurfaced between Edge End and Lower Berry Hill because it has reached the end of its life.

Crews will be using very large machinery when resurfacing this road, so in order to keep them safe a full road closure will be in place overnight between 7pm and 7am until 20th August (excluding weekends). The work will be delivered in two phases to help to maintain local access.

The county council has only recently completed a new road surface for the section of the A4136 between Nailbridge and Plump Hill.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, said: "I'm determined to deliver on our promise to invest £150 million into Gloucestershire's roads and this is yet another major resurfacing project on a well used stretch of road.

"I'd like to thank residents and businesses for their patience while we carry out this work. By carrying out the resurfacing overnight we will keep disruption to a minimum."

Cllr Terry Hale, county councillor for Drybrook and Lydbrook, said: "I'm delighted that another 3 kilometre section of the A4136 is being resurfaced so soon after the Nailbridge to Plump Hill section. This is an important route, linking Forest of Dean communities to Gloucester in the east and Wales in the west. I would like to thank all those who depend on this section of the A4136 in advance for their co-operation and understanding."

There is no guaranteed access for vehicles during the road closure, except in emergencies. A signed diversion will be in place.

What's the diversion route?

Follow the A4136 towards Lydbrook. At the junction with the B4234 (New Road) turn right and continue along the B4234 to the junction with the B4226 (Speech House Road). Turn right again and follow the road through Poolway Road and Bakers Hill to the junction with the B4028 (Gloucester Road). Take Gloucester Road and at the junction with the B4228 (Staunton Road) turn right. Continue along the B4228 all the way to the junction with the A4136, and then turn right. The route is the same in reverse.
