View Earth ‘from space’ - in Gloucester
By Sarah Wood | 17th June 2019
The Earth will rise in the grounds of Llanthony Secunda Priory later this month.
Created using detailed NASA imagery of the Earth's surface, Luke Jerram's Gaia is a vast 7m diameter sculpture of planet Earth. In Greek mythology, Gaia is a goddess, the personification of the Earth.
Between 28th and 30th June, Gaia will rise majestically within the Tithe Barn at Llanthony Secunda Priory. A special surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones will echo through the trees.
Gaia evokes a sense of the 'overview effect' - a powerful feeling common to astronauts who, in viewing Earth from afar, have a greater understanding and awe for the planet and the growing need to take better care of our home.
Bristol-based artist Luke Jerram is known for creating extraordinary sculptural and interactive art projects which have excited and inspired people around the globe, including Museum of the Moon and Park and Slide - a 95m inflatable slide down Park Street in Bristol.
Gaia has been created in partnership with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Bluedot and the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres.
In the event of bad weather, and especially strong winds, Gaia will be taken down for safety. Please check before travelling.
