VIDEO: Livestock farm on a mission to educate the generations

A Gloucestershire farm is seeking to educate generations on both the environmental and health aspects of farming.

The Native Collection comprises 'The Native Butcher' which focuses on sourcing and farming the best meat possible; 'The Supper Club', which welcomes guests to discover a delicious seasonal menu from the farm; and 'The River Severn Fairy Trail', an educational trail for visitors of all ages.

Punchline editor Mark Owen joined other media visitors at Lime Kiln Farm, Hasfield - located between Gloucester and Ledbury - to sample some of its delights.

Mark chatted to Richard Barter and Tara Vaughan, who created The Native Butcher.

Richard said: "It's a family farm. We've been here since 1999 and prior to that we were just up the road since the early 1980s.

"We keep purely native British breeds. We've got Gloucester cows, Cotswold sheep and Gloucester Old Spot and Tamworth pigs.

"We are purely grass-fed. We've grown it, we've butchered it and we've cooked it and we're eating it here.

The Supper Club opens every Friday evening throughout the summer when guests will enjoy a delicious three-course set menu and accompanying wine list.

Richard added: "We can have a maximum of 30 or 40 sitting down. It's generally what we've got in the butchery. We try to get a banquet feel, a lot of people getting together and just chatting and mingling, sitting by the fire pit and having a giggle."

When Richard and Tara created The Naked Butcher, after many conversations about farming, food and health, a common theme became apparent - respect. Respect for livestock they rear, respect for the environment we all share and respect for ourselves.

It is the brand's mission for all generations to be educated about farming, food, and where it comes from, and to consume the very best quality of food possible. Working with the belief that rearing the traditional breeds in a traditional manner produces the best quality meat possible in a sustainable, affordable, environmentally friendly, and above all respectful way.

The Native Butcher ensures the mindset that nature is never wrong and farming traditionally produces healthier food from happier animals within a sound ecological system, is paramount and at the heart of everything they do.

Consciously keeping their business small to ensure they are in control of everything that leaves the farm, the brand prides itself on its reputation that is presented in every piece of food their customers consume. Working to a zero-waste policy, they compost, reuse, and recycle at every opportunity.

Richard and Tara were able to commit to their zero-waste policy further by opening their own kitchen, providing them with the ability to turn any by-product into a healthy meal. Working hard to be a sustainable farm, butchers, and kitchen, the brand's aim is to have minimal impact on the environment, only keeping traditional breeds and farming to increase biodiversity, regenerate the land and keep the balance between farming and nature.

The Native Butcher provides a selection of 100 per cent grass-fed meat boxes, cuts of meat, a restaurant on site at their farm and various activities for people of all ages to enjoy.

The Supper Club is hosted in the beautiful meadows on the farm and the special setting provides the perfect venue for private parties and group bookings. All meals include the farm's own cuts of meat from their butchery, with locally sourced seasonal vegetables.

Alongside their other initiatives, through their passionate desire to educate children about where their food comes from, Richard and Tara launched 'The River Severn Fairy Trail'.

Creating an educational and family-friendly destination suitable for all generations, The River Severn Fairy Trail allows visitors to explore the farm and to feed a range of animals, including sheep, pigs, cattle, ponies, donkeys, ducks and many more!

The Fairy Trail is the perfect summer holiday activity, opening from mid-July to early September. The farm also offers weekend camping holidays with access to the fairy trail, birthday party packages, school trips, food, and drink on site from their very own farm.

Mark Owen editor of Punchline-gloucester.com said: "A big thanks to Richard and Tara for an enjoyable evening. Delicious food, wonderful venue, and great company. You couldn't ask for a better night."
