'Anyone got a spare 8,000 tonnes of stone?' - Businessman makes unusual social media request

Every good story has an air of mystery, and this one has it in spades - or should that be digger fulls?

We are talking about social media postings by significant Gloucester city businessman Eamonn McGurk, saviour and owner of Gloucester City FC as well as owner and boss of Keyway - and more besides.

While it is not unusual to request a little help, advice, assistance, via Twitter or LinkedIn Mr McGurk's post read as follows: "Required: 8,000t stone for piling mat".

The 't', we presumed rightly, referring to tonnes - making this one almighty pile of aggregate.

While the man in the street unfamiliar with the technicalities of construction might be somewhat baffled (or perhaps it was just us here at Punchline?), it seems many were not - and even more surprisingly Mr McGurk was inundated with sensible offers!

If a new Chosen Hill or Robinswood Hill begins to grow from nowhere and overshadow the answer to what is going on may lie in this apparent rush to satisfy.

Try as we did to 'drill down' into the story Mr McGurk remained discreet and, in the spirit of the whole story, fittingly enigmatic.

Neatly sidestepping the question about what job this referred to the county businessman immediately detected our distinct lack of knowledge as to what on earth a 'piling mat' was and decided, with that at least, to help us out.

Although he did later come back and explain - probably to stop us bothering him any more - that social media was just another tool in his armoury for getting word out there to his sector with the ultimate aim being to recycle as much material as his company could.

In the context of the kind of work carried out by the likes of Keyway, which specialises in plant hire, transport and bulk excavation, recycling of aggregates and skip hire, perhaps it is us making something of a mountain out of a molehill.
