Work has started today on road improvements which will mean delays on one of the main routes into Gloucester.

The length of Bristol Road between Tuffley Avenue and the A430 near Woodrow Way - around 1.5 kilometres - will be affected.

The scheme will see new crossing facilities including traffic islands, and adjustments to the layout of the road to make it safer and encourage more people to cycle.

Surface dressing will seal the carriageway with bitumen and chippings.

This essential work to improve the road for both cyclists and drivers is set to last around five weeks. As far as possible, work will be carried out during the day to avoid the morning and evening peak traffic.

The new layout will include marked cycle lanes in both directions on stretches of the road.

The road will be kept open during the work. Temporary traffic lights and other traffic management will help keep people and the workforce safe. Delays should be expected during site working hours, so people are advised to find an alternative route if possible.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said, "We are continuing to invest in the county's vital road network. Upgrading this important route within Gloucester, and in particular making the improvements for cyclists, is important to keep our county moving.

"I'd like to thank road users, local residents and businesses for their patience during this work. We will limit the disruption as much as possible."

Cllr Pam Tracey, local member for Gloucester (Hempsted and Westage) said: "These are much needed improvements that will make a real difference to local people. I'm sure the residents and businesses will be as pleased as I am."
